Coinbase Moves Deeper Into Event Trading With Planned Acquisition of The Clearing Company

2025-12-23

  • Coinbase plans to grow prediction markets by acquiring The Clearing Company and adding event trading to its main platform.
  • The Clearing Company team will join Coinbase to help scale regulated prediction markets for elections, sports, and data events.
  • Prediction markets gain traction as Coinbase expands beyond crypto trading using regulated venues and external liquidity sources.

Coinbase has agreed to acquire The Clearing Company as it deepens its push into event-based trading. The move supports Coinbase’s strategy to expand beyond traditional crypto markets. It also reflects growing interest in trading products tied to real-world outcomes. The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions. Coinbase expects the transaction to close in January.

The acquisition comes shortly after Coinbase rolled out prediction markets on its platform. These markets allow users to trade outcomes linked to elections, economic data, and sports events. Traders access these products through the same interface used for crypto and derivatives. This structure aims to simplify participation for existing users. Coinbase continues to integrate new products into a single trading environment.

The Clearing Company Team Joins Coinbase

The Clearing Company was founded earlier this year to build a regulated onchain prediction markets platform. The startup focused on combining blockchain infrastructure with compliant market design. Its founder previously held growth roles at leading prediction market platforms. In August, the company raised $15 million in seed funding. Coinbase Ventures took part in that funding round.

Following the acquisition, The Clearing Company’s team will join Coinbase. The startup employed about ten people before the deal. Coinbase confirmed that nearly the entire team will transition into the company. Their experience will help scale Coinbase’s prediction markets product. The integration adds specialized expertise to Coinbase’s product development efforts.

Growing Momentum in Prediction Markets

Prediction markets have gained traction across crypto and fintech platforms. These products often see higher engagement during major global events. As a result, exchanges view them as a way to diversify trading activity. Coinbase launched its prediction markets through a regulated venue. At launch, the company sourced liquidity from Kalshi to support trading.

Coinbase has said it plans to expand its prediction markets over time. The roadmap includes adding more platforms and additional market types. This approach allows the company to measure demand while maintaining compliance. Regulation remains a key focus as Coinbase grows this segment. The company aims to avoid legal risks faced by some competitors.

The acquisition marks Coinbase’s tenth announced deal in 2025. Earlier acquisitions include Roam, Spindl, Iron Fish, and Deribit. Other deals this year involved Opyn Markets, Liquifi, Sensible, Echo, and Vector.fun. Coinbase has relied on acquisitions to accelerate product expansion. The strategy highlights its push toward a broader multi-asset trading model.

Prediction markets continue to draw mainstream attention. Leading platforms reported strong trading volumes in recent months. Combined volumes reached about $8 billion in November. Media outlets have also started using market-based probabilities in coverage. This trend signals rising demand for event-driven trading tools.
