Ethereum Developers Advance FOCIL Plan for Upcoming Hegota Upgrade

Ethereum Developers Advance FOCIL Plan for Upcoming Hegota Upgrade

The Ethereum development team is getting closer to finalizing the Hegota upgrade. Currently, they are working on defining it. Researchers have begun working on a proposal that is designed to ensure that censorship risks on Ethereum are reduced. This proposal aims to address the emerging issues with block builders having too much power on Ethereum.

The Ethereum research team has begun supporting the Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists, or FOCIL. This is a protocol-level solution that aims to ensure that valid transactions are included on the Ethereum blockchain within a certain period. Block builders may ignore or delay these transactions.

The proposal was first considered for the Glamsterdam upgrade but was shelved. However, it has come back as one of the top issues for the upcoming Hegota upgrade. This is considered the next step in Ethereum’s development roadmap. The researcher working on it is Thomas Thiery, also known as soispoke, who focuses on fairness within the Ethereum network.

FOCIL Counters MEV Concentration Risks

The FOCIL proposal aims to ensure that support comes from multiple validators rather than just a select group of builders. This is important because there is emerging concern with the rise of MEV and infrastructure that is leading to market concentration.

This plan also deals with the long-term reliability issues faced in block production. MEV systems reward efficiency and speed, which benefits the larger builders. However, FOCIL deals with this by ensuring that the validator adheres to the rules of inclusion, regardless of the builder’s wishes.

Mantle has also announced its plan to transition from using EigenDA to Ethereum blobs. It has decided to use the increased blob limit provided by Fusaka as it moves closer to becoming a full ZK rollup. This will allow it to align itself with the changing data structure on Ethereum.

Ethereum’s Hegota Plan Adds Protections Despite Limits

Despite the trade-offs associated with the Hegota plan, the current state of the network does not permit blob transactions via FOCIL. It also does not allow MEV-related private transactions. However, developers have indicated that these gaps will be included in future updates.

This network should not have to wait until a serious censorship event occurs. The current state does not have high filtering rates, but the situation may change at any time. It is better to include the Hegota plan, which will provide more security before the situation becomes unpredictable.

Validators will be required to adhere to the rules without losing any rewards. This will be beneficial to the users and developers as well. They will be able to enjoy the benefits of the block space more reliably.

In another update, BitMine Immersion Technologies has confirmed the purchase of a large number of ETH tokens in 2026. It has acquired 40,302 ETH, bringing its total holdings to 4.24 million tokens, valued at $12.05 billion.
