Ticker Briefing: MSFTUSDT — The Company Almost Everyone Owns Without Deciding To

2026-10-20

In the year to June 2026 Microsoft generated $182.9bn of cash from operations, up $46.8bn. Free cash flow fell, from $71.6bn to $67.0bn, a second consecutive annual decline, in a year when revenue grew 18%.

One line reconciles them: additions to property and equipment came to $115.9bn, roughly triple the figure of two years earlier, and capital expenditure now consumes more than all the incremental cash the business produced. A company defined for two decades by capital-light recurring revenue is now among the most capital-intensive in the world, and many people are financing that without having chosen it.

Why It Matters

Microsoft is one of the largest single positions inside both indices covered elsewhere in this series: 4.29% of the S&P 500 fund at 30 June 2026 and 5.58% of the Nasdaq-100 fund in late September 2026.

Passive vehicles are sold as removing single-name risk. At these weights they relocate it rather than remove it.

The Big Picture

The annuity is working. Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $214.4bn in fiscal 2026, up 27%, and commercial remaining performance obligation, contracted revenue not yet recognised, rose 84% to $678bn, over two years of revenue in backlog.

The buildout is financed unusually. At 30 June 2026 Microsoft disclosed $743.8bn of total contractual obligations against long-term debt principal of just $46.1bn. It is a lease and supply-commitment story, not a debt story, and those obligations do not surface in interest expense. Servers depreciate over two to six years, so the return depends on how long they keep earning.

The OpenAI stake is now a volatile accounting item. Microsoft holds an equity-method stake of approximately 25% on an as-converted basis. In fiscal 2026 it contributed $6.5bn of net gains to other income, worth $0.67 of diluted EPS; in fiscal 2025 it produced $4.8bn of net losses. The fiscal 2026 gain relates primarily to a dilution gain from OpenAI’s October 2025 recapitalisation, a non-cash consequence of a restructuring rather than an operating result, and Microsoft reports adjusted figures excluding it. The relationship runs both ways: $24.1bn of fiscal 2026 revenue came from OpenAI, a related party.

By The Numbers

  • $115.95bn additions to property and equipment in fiscal 2026, against $64.55bn in fiscal 2025 and $44.48bn in fiscal 2024.
  • $67.0bn free cash flow in fiscal 2026, down from $71.6bn, despite operating cash flow rising 34%.
  • $743.8bn total contractual obligations at 30 June 2026, including $443.5bn of leases and $194.1bn of purchase commitments, against $46.1bn of long-term debt principal.
  • $24.1bn fiscal 2026 revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI, with $6.0bn of receivables outstanding.
  • 4.29% of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust at 30 June 2026 and 5.58% of the Invesco QQQ Trust at 29 September 2026.

What Moves It

The Azure growth rate. One percentage figure each quarter carries more weight than the rest of the release: the market’s proxy for whether AI consumption is converting into revenue.

Capital expenditure guidance. Commentary on next year’s spending moves the stock independently of reported results: capex is the denominator in every free cash flow calculation.

The other income line. The OpenAI stake can swing GAAP results by more than half a dollar per share against adjusted figures.

How It Tends To Behave

Microsoft has historically shown lower realised volatility than the high-beta semiconductor names beside it, a function of contracted rather than cyclical revenue. The exception is the quarterly earnings release, a move regularly large enough to register at index level.

For Crypto Traders

Crypto has built the same concentration at speed, in treasury companies whose equity is a leveraged claim on a single token. The more durable connection is financing: a capital programme funded through leases and purchase commitments rather than bonds is a credit story, and credit conditions are how macro liquidity reaches risk assets including crypto. The correlation between Microsoft and major crypto assets is unstable.

On XT

XT lists MSFTUSDT, a USDT-margined perpetual futures contract. Holding it is not owning Microsoft stock: no share, no vote, no dividend, no claim on the company. It is a leveraged derivative whose outcome depends on the price path and on funding paid or received along the way, and amplified exposure amplifies losses exactly as it amplifies gains. The equity trades in US market hours while the contract runs continuously, so earnings releases, the largest single-session movers here, land while that market is closed.

Two Ways to Be Long the Same Balance Sheet

A broad index contract and a technology index contract are not independent exposures: a meaningful slice of each is the same company, the same infrastructure bet, the same AI laboratory in its other income line. Passive wrappers are said to remove the need for an opinion about individual companies; at these weights they impose one silently.
