11.5M Crypto Tokens Died in 2025: Why Meme Coins Fail Fast

2026-01-12

On Pump.fun and similar platforms, meme coins are continuously churned as if someone is firing a machine gun. Even now, as you read this, there is a funny meme coin being deployed, not to solve a problem but for entertainment.

For this reason, it came as no surprise that over 11.5M crypto tokens “died” in 2025. CoinGecko analysts say that, given the sheer number of token deaths, it is evident that 2025 was a deadly year for new crypto projects.

Despite the carnage, the Bitcoin price barely moved. The resilience in the BTC USDT price action also had a positive impact on Solana, the host network for the millions of shit coins minted every hour. SOL USDT is presently firm, trading above $120.

13.4M Crypto Tokens Have Died Since 2021: Blame Meme Coin Launchpads?

As long as liquidity is being injected into all tokens deploying and listing on a DEX like PumpSwap or Raydium, expect more meme coins to flood the market.

Most of them will barely do a 2X before being rugged anyway.

The more they are launched, the more buyers give up, confused as to which can be the next 100X token.

Those failure rates sound unreal until you see what changed.

Creating a token on Pump.fun, for example, now takes minutes and costs almost nothing. Easy in. Fast out.

Pump.fun lowered the barrier so much that anyone could mint a token in a few clicks. Millions did.

This is why most of the failures came from meme coins.

The bad news is that every year, millions of new tokens die.

Analysts note that since 2021, over 13.4M tokens, including some of the best cryptos to buy, have died in 2021.

It could get worse in the coming years.

Before this wave of deaths, yearly failures sat in the low six digits. Looking at data,  they arrive by the million.

Supply exploded. Attention did not.

Why Meme Coins Die Faster Than You Expect

Meme coins exist for entertainment purposes only.

And whenever a new meme coin is launched,  the probability of success is less than 1%, even lower.

Only a few, like PEPE and BONK, for example, have survived to command over $1Bn in market cap.

The dismal success rate stems from a flaw common in all meme coins.

Besides “hopium” and expecting a 1000X rally, there is really no reason to hold them.

There is no product. No cash flow. No long-term plan.

Price depends on new buyers showing up. Once that slows, liquidity dries up.

Liquidity is the money sitting in the pool that lets you sell. When it vanishes, exits disappear.

The October 10, 2025 crash made this worse.

That sell-off wiped over $19Bn in leveraged trades and erased speculative demand.

When risk appetite left, meme coins followed.

To put it in numbers, the Fartcoin’s market cap tanked from around $745M in early October 2025 to less than $290M in Q4 2025.

This sell-off taught a brutal lesson.

Low prices do not mean value. A token at $0.00001 can still be expensive if nobody wants it tomorrow.

With more meme coins being launched and traders risking every day, the odds of loss only rise, translating to more deaths.

This is why most traders stick to a tiny handful of successful meme coins while ignoring thousands of clones.

It also explains why seasoned investors treat meme coin buys like lottery tickets. Small size. Quick decisions. No emotional attachment.

As meme coin creation stays frictionless, failures will keep stacking up. The smart move is not chasing every launch. It is learning when not to click buy.
