Weekly Economy XPredict Roundup: Ten Basis Points Apart in the Treasury Yield Market

2026-10-16

Ten basis points separate a 5.4% Treasury yield from 5.5%. On XPredict’s market asking how high the 10-year Treasury yield will go before 2027, the displayed Yes price fell from 45% to 22% between those two thresholds in the October 15 snapshot.

The Treasury’s latest daily reading, for 14 October 2026, stood at 5.19% — 21 basis points below the first level and 31 below the second. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. Understanding those quotes starts with what each contract measures, the period it covers and the trading activity behind it.

5.4% 45% 66% +21 bps 59,451.89 USD
5.5% 22% 82% +31 bps 197,831.39 USD

The market lists 13 contracts; the other nine, at lower thresholds, are closed, so these four are the active set.

The step from 5.4% to 5.5% is the widest in the table: ten basis points of yield, 23 percentage points of displayed Yes price. Every threshold above it is quoted lower still.

Ten Basis Points Apart: Inside XPredict's Treasury Yield Market

Two Timeframes, One Market

Over the previous week, the 10-year yield had fallen nine basis points, from 5.28% on 7 October. Over the previous month, it had risen 22, from 4.97% on 14 September. The same market offered a different picture depending on where the comparison began.

That is this market’s lesson in miniature: a yield move means little until the window it is measured over is fixed. The window is also what decides whether a threshold counts.

What Is Moving the 10-Year

The 10-year matters because it anchors long-term borrowing costs across mortgages, corporate debt and government financing. Bond prices and yields move inversely: when a bond’s price falls, the buyer pays less for the same fixed payments, so the yield rises. What the yield contains is expected short-term rates over many years, inflation compensation, and a term premium — the extra return demanded for holding long-dated debt rather than rolling short-term paper.

Three things were pressing on it.

Inflation. CPI rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year in the September data, with core at 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually, released 14 October. Higher readings can raise the compensation investors demand for holding long-dated debt.

Fed policy. On 16 September the FOMC raised its target range by 25 basis points to 3.75–4.00%, describing activity as solid. The policy rate is set by the Fed; the 10-year is where investors are willing to lend for a decade. Neither mechanically determines the other.

Borrowing. Treasury’s 3 August estimate put fourth-quarter privately held net marketable borrowing at $628 billion, with guidance two days later anticipating unchanged nominal coupon auction sizes. More supply than demand can lift the yield investors require. That figure is a forecast, not completed issuance.

What the Contracts Measure

Each contract asks whether the Treasury’s published daily 10-year par yield reaches or exceeds the listed value on any eligible date through 31 December 2026. Equality qualifies. The reference is that published daily series, not an intraday quote on any individual security.

Suppose the published daily yield reaches 5.4% in November, then falls back to 5.2% by year-end. The 5.4% contract would still meet its Yes condition. A temporary crossing can decide the outcome long before the final December reading.

The thresholds are therefore not competing outcomes. A qualifying reading at 6.0% would satisfy 5.5% and 5.7% as well, so the displayed Yes prices should not be added together or read as a distribution of year-end yields.

Their starting dates differ. The 5.5%, 5.7% and 6.0% contracts cover any date from 11 November 2025; the 5.4% contract runs from its own creation on 23 September 2026. A 6.0% reading would satisfy 5.4% only if it fell on or after that date.

Where Trading Activity Was Concentrated

The nearest threshold attracted the highest displayed Yes price. The next threshold attracted more than three times the cumulative trading volume.

The 5.4% contract, 21 basis points away and quoted at 45%, had turned over roughly 59,000 USD, the lowest in the set. The 5.5% contract, priced at less than half as much, had turned over about 198,000 USD. Cumulative volume records what has traded over a contract’s life; it does not establish how much depth is available now.

What to Watch Before the Window Closes

Treasury’s August guidance names 4 November 2026 as the next quarterly refunding announcement, when issuance plans are set out. Inflation and employment releases and Fed communications all fall inside the observation window, which runs to 31 December 2026; the market closes 1 January 2027 at 04:59 UTC.

That returns to the contrast the snapshot opened with. The first threshold sat 21 basis points above the current yield; the next required another ten. And because a single qualifying daily reading is enough, either condition could be met before year-end, and stay met whatever yields do afterwards.
