The UK government has declared a prohibition on political parties receiving donations in cryptocurrencies. It quoted the risks of foreign interference and money laundering as reasons for the decision. Besides, this step is one of the many measures aimed at regulating political donations and making the democratic processes of the country more transparent.
The ban, effective immediately, will disallow political parties from receiving donations in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The decision is based on an independent investigation into foreign financial interference in the United Kingdom’s politics.

The report, which was led by Philip Rycroft, a former senior civil servant, suggested that a temporary ban on crypto donations be implemented until proper regulations are introduced.

Besides the cryptocurrency ban, the UK government will set a limit on donations from overseas electors to 100,000 per year, including the equivalent of loans and regulated transactions. The intention behind this is to stop foreign actors from having an excessive influence on UK politics. The limit is also given to British citizens living abroad who are still on the UK electoral register.
